3000 words exactly haha~ and with that, Vegas is ready to rank up uwu I really like how Cadence came out akdjgh

~~~~~
Vegas gave a grunt as a sharp-toothed pup snapped at his ear, raising a paw and easily pushing it to the ground and pinning it. The little black pup squirmed and yowled for a moment and finally settled for chewing on the mastiff's nails. "Stop," he said, his voice firm and commanding. The pup gave him a pout and settled, laying on it's back and staring up at the ceiling. "Are you that bored?" he asked, glancing over to Rabbit where she romped with a couple of the bigger pups, teaching them some of her fighting moves. The pup gave a nod and a whine, and the collie mix paused in her lesson and glanced over at the mastiff where he held the pup captive. Rabbit gave a snort of laughter and trotted over, her tail curled up over her back.
"Having trouble, are we?" she asked, headbutting the mastiff's chest to push him off of the pup, who gave a bark of thanks and dashed off to play. "Why don't you and another cannon fodder go fetch some new toys for the pups?" she said. She made it seem like a suggestion, when in reality both dogs knew it was an order.
"Mm, alright." Vegas said, turning to leave the puppy room and head to the hotel's lobby. He glanced around for a suitable companion, but he didn't really have any friends aside from Rabbit and Delilah. He frowned lightly as he looked around, a lost expression on his face.
Cadence was laying in the lobby, taking it easy for once instead of running around either playing or training herself with her blue metal bat. She was almost an expert at using the blunt object to protect herself as well as deal some serious damage. Fortunately or not, she hasn't had to test herself out in actual combat just yet. It felt weird to the merle female, being in the hotel without company. Cadence was normally a very social creature and liked having others around. So the sound of another dog entering the lobby was welcoming. Cadence looked over at the Fila Brasileiro and gave him a smile. "Hi there." The young female has probably seen him around before during the two and a half years she has lived in the hotel, but never got a chance to learn his name. "My name is Cadence. What's yours?" She got up and approached the large male, always happy to meet new dogs.
Vegas frowned, his eyes drifting from dog to dog. He was tempted to return to Rabbit and have her rope some other dog into helping him, but the soft voice of Cadence reached his ears. He turned to look down at the little female, dipping his head in greeting. He'd seen her around now and then, but never spoken to the little mixed breed. "Hello, little Cadence," he said, his raspy voice quite gentle. It was a bit of a shock to most dogs the first time they heard his voice, but he pushed the thought from his mind. Any doubts about himself had to be crushed, lest they fester. "I'm Vegas." he said, smiling lightly. The young dog seemed nice enough, and maybe she'd be up for helping him out. His tail gave an easy wag and he leaned forward to sniff tentatively at her cheek, ready to pull away if she growled. The notches in his ears and fine scars on his face had taught him to be wary when first getting acquainted with other dogs, whether they were in his pack or not.
It indeed was a bit of a surprise to the mix how gentle his voice sounded, but it was a pleasant one to say the least. "Vegas.. that's a nice name. I like it!" That was Cadence all right, still a big sweetheart towards other in the pack. Her hind end began to wiggle as Vegas sniffed at her cheek, not minding how close he was at all. Despite no longer having her tail to wag, it had not stopped her butt from wiggling all the same, as if she had always been like that. She sniffed him a little in return, to help her remember his scent from now on and giggled softly in delight. "Whacha up to on this fine day, Vegas?"
Vegas smiled softly when Cadence sniffed back at her, her entire body wiggling with delight. She such a cute and sweet little thing it made his heart ache; he'd seen so many hearts hardened by the mafia life, yet dogs like Cadence somehow managed to survive. "Thank you very much," he said, his tail continuing to wag slowly. "I'm actually looking for a dog to accompany me on an errand; are you free at the moment, Cadence?" he asked, hoping very much she'd say yes.
The smile on Cadence's face broke out into an even bigger one. The only thing she liked more than making friends is being able to help friends. "Oh yes, very much so!" Not being able to help herself, she did a quick spin around from the rush of happiness. Of course, she knew it was time to buckle down a bit and tried to regain her composure. "What kind of errand is it?" She secretly hoped it was something that she could put her talents to good use, like stealing or breaking in. With a smile still on her face, she waited to hear what exactly they were about to do.
he mastiff's tail quickened when Cadence spun, and he was tempted to join her excited dance, but he decided to remain still and keep some of his dignity intact. He didn't really feel the urge to play or be silly anymore; a rough year on the streets had made him wary and destroyed much of his innocence. He licked his lips and gave a quick nod, glancing back at the grand main staircase, then back at the little mixed breed. "Wonderful," he started, his voice cracking and forcing him to pause. "Rabbit told me to fetch some new toys for the pups." he finished, not sure entirely how he'd go about the task. He didn't want to get into too ugly a situation, but he wanted the toys to be quite new. Vegas would not return with old, used toys; the future of the di trieste deserved the very best he could find, or steal.
A small twinkle shine through her cracked eyes. Toys, pups, and stealing.. those were a few of her favorite things. Cadence’s smile couldn’t get any bigger at this point. ”Oh sweet! There a couple of stores with some good toys to steal from if ya want to go that route.” Behind the smiles and sweetness, there was a somewhat experienced thief who started calculating a number of plans and situations in order to pull off such a heist. But there was only so much planing she could do until she could see which place they would try to hit. ”Is there a place you had in mind?” Doing her best to keep her excitement now under control as she waited to hear Vegas’s response.
Vegas knew that mischievous gleam in the dog's eye, and he liked it. He could already tell that Cadence knew what to do, and this lessened the burden of his task. He wasn't a huge fan of stealing from humans, but as of late his love for mankind had began to wither and die. "I have a few ideas for where to go," he said, giving another nod and then turning to walk through the lobby and out the door. He glanced back at Cadence to see if she was following, and when his paws hit the dry grass he picked up an extended trot, glancing back regularly to see if his companion was following. "I know this store receives a large number of boxes every other day, so we can check and see if there are any toys." he explained. It was worth a look, he decided, turning down an alleyway and coming to a stop to survey the building. He could see a few men unloading boxes and placing them on the ground, and he watched for several moments to see if he recognized any words on the boxes. He looked at Cadence to see if she'd be ready to go if an opportunity presented itself.
Cadence did not hesitate to follow when Vegas began to move towards the target, keeping pace with the larger male as they walked. She was curious to see which place Vegas had in mind for this particular job. It was only when the building came into sight that the young female recognized the place and smirked, knowing that they did sell toys here. She’s waited to get stuff from this place for quite sometime, but never got the chance to do it.. until now. She moved down the alley with Vegas, barley making any noise to avoid causing any unwanted attention. Seeing the men moving boxes out of a truck, she watched them carefully, trying to determine which box had toys in them. Her gaze shifted to Vegas and gave him a confident smirk, letting him silently know that she was ready to go when he was.
Vegas smiled at Cadence, pleased to see that she was prepared. She was a capable young dog, and he could only hope that she'd apply herself and earn the rank she deserved. He was tired of being at the bottom of the totem pole... hopefully they'd grab plenty of good toys and Rabbit and Vice would be pleased with their work. His ears perked when the men paused in their work and went inside the building, a few bringing a box or two, but many still remained on the ground. When the door slammed shut the mastiff trotted forward, his body low and his movements catlike. He was incredibly quick and agile for a dog his size, and soon he set upon the boxes. They were taped shut, but he easily crunched their corners and tore the boxes open. He gave a snort when he found some hairspray and the stench sent him skittering to the next box. He tore open box after box and began to lose hope when finally one gave a squeak as he tore it open. He peeked inside and saw it was filled with little fluffy toys, some with squeakers and some without. He let out a satisfied snort and grabbed an undestroyed corner of the box, turning back to Cadence to see if she'd found anything.
Little did Vegas know that Cadence felt the same way about him, hoping he would rise up in the ranks as well. It wasn’t so much that she was tired of being at the bottom as she wanted to show that she could be a valuable member of the Trieste family and finally was starting to feel that she prove her worth. The young mix watched as the men went inside the building, leaving behind many boxes before taking off with Vegas, keeping her steps silent and body low as well. Cadence may not of had the best bite in the pack, but she was no stranger to tape and ripped them off with ease. Her face held some disapproval as she ripped open the first box to only find bottles of what looked like some kind of medicine in them. After opening a couple more boxes did she finally stumble upon what she was searching for. This particular box held some balls and tug toys, perfect for some of the more energetic pups like what she was at their age. Grabbing the box, she looked back over at Vegas had who also found some toys. With a nod of her head, she would would book it when he did, hoping that none of the humans had spotted them.
Vegas gave a nod at Cadence when she picked up her own box, and the humans chose that exact moment to open up the door. They were dumbstruck by what they saw, and simply stood and stared. Vegas snarled and bared his teeth the best he could around the cardboard, motioning to Cadence to take off. He kept his eyes on the humans and when she was a good distance away he spun and raced after her. He caught up easily and let out a muffled chuckle. He led the little mixed breed to an alleyway and dropped his body, tearing it open more to get a better look at what he'd found. A few oversize tennis balls and stuffed toys of various shapes filled the box to the brim, and his tail gave a quick wag. "Jackpot," he said, turning to greet Cadence. He sniffed at her cheek and gave a whine, his tail wagging steadily. "Good work back there." he said, turning to ease to his haunches. He wanted to breathe for a moment before returning to the hotel.
When Cadence saw the doors open, she let out a muffled groan as the humans came back into sight. Of course they came back out now. Can't make things too easy, can we? Cadence did not hesitate to take off when Vegas gave her the signal to, knowing the older male knew what he was doing. The mutt may lack in her jaw power, but she makes up for it in her still growing leg strength and didn’t take too long for her to put a fair amount of distance between them. Once Vegas had caught back up with her, she gladly followed him into an alleyway. Cadence did not need to rest herself, but it was easy to see that Vegas needed a breather. Besides,it was a good idea to hide for a bit so the humans don’t see them heading towards the hotel. Last thing they needed was to endanger everyone there with humans. She set down the box for a moment to greet Vegas in return. Her butt was wiggling as he sniffed her and sniffed him as well. ”Thanks! You did good too.”<3 Cadence gave Vegas a soft lick before sitting down. She would be shifting her glance around the alley to make sure nothing was coming down the alley.
Vegas gave a contented sigh; Cadence was just the kind of dog he needed to befriend. She knew what she was doing and was friendly to boot. Many of the experienced dogs he'd met were aggressive, unwilling to interact and sniff and satisfy his basic desire for conversation and contact. He licked his lips and panted for a moment, then trotted to the end of the alley to make sure the coast was clear. He returned to his box and snatched it up, giving it a playful shake before smacking Cadence on the hip with his tail. He let out a snort of laughter and took off trotting towards the hotel, ready to pick up the pace if Cadence came after him.
Despite everything that has happened to her so far in her short life, Cadence would more than likely always remain friendly towards her fellow family members, even as she gains more experience with age. At least, she hoped she would anyway. Why wouldn’t she? No one in Trieste has wronged her in any way and she has made way more friends than enemies at this point. Feeling a tail smack her hip, Cadence giggled as she grabbed the box and began to chase Vegas back towards the hotel with a huge grin on her face. She was defiantly happy to be apart of this family.
Vegas picked up a gallop when Cadence followed after him, his tail up as he weaved through the familiar alleyways of the city. He knew this area like the back of his paw, and soon they were back at the hotel. He raced up the lawn and leaped through the front door, drawing the attention of all the dogs lingering around the lobby. He skidded around the corner back to the puppy room, glancing back to make sure Cadence was close, and then walked in casually. When the two dogs entered the room with their boxes of toys the puppies came rushing at them, nearly toppling them over as they ripped at the boxes with their tiny teeth. Vegas gave a playful growl and started a game of tug of war, fighting for only a moment before letting the puppy win. Rabbit gave a nod to the pair, impressed with their work, and the mastiff turned to take a seat along the wall and watch the pups play. "Thanks, Cadence," he said, his tail thumping against the wall. "If you ever need anything, just let me know, hm?" he finished.
Cadence followed close behind Vegas as they made their way to the puppy room with the goodies. The mix laughed as they were almost toppled over by a wave of pups eager to get at the new toys. Wasting no time, she happily helped pass out all the toys before joining in on the fun, playing pass the ball with a couple of the other pups. She only looked away from the game when Vegas spoke to her from against a wall and gave him a huge grin. "Any time, my friend." And she really did meant it. She will always lend a helping paw to those who want it. This is what family was for and, for as long as Vegas and the others are around, she will always consider them family.
Vegas gave a nod to Cadence, smiling softly when she called him friend. Now that the pups were happy and racing about with their new toys, he dropped to his belly with a sigh, ready for a nap after his errand. His tail gave a thump and struck the wall with a loud crack, watching the pups and his young companion play.
