^{Patience was key to working with Ash. She had been at Dogwood Farms for two days, left alone aside from throwing hay in her round pen and checking her water to work the sedation from her system. Elizabeth wanted to wait until all the drugs were gone and finally there was nothing left but a worried, wild mare. She had started several horses in her life, and was sure that this one would be no different from the others once she had made that first bit of positive contact. Right now the grey mare wanted nothing to do with her and shied away every time Elizabeth approached the fence.

Finally the woman was sick of the flurry of dust and release of energy that always caught the attention of the other horses, so she walked straight up to the pen and leaned against it, watching the mare as she fled to the opposite side of the pen and bumped into the fence. Elizabeth kept her stare on the horse, kept the pressure on until the mare could hold her head sky-high no longer and drooped a bit. Instantly the woman took a step back from the fence, and the mare perked her ears and watched with curiosity.

A step forward and the mare stepped back, bumping the fence once more and trying to phase through it to freedom. She had no luck however, and after a moment of worrying she let her head drop a bit and then the woman would back away. After this happened a few times it clicked in the mare's mind that being worried only brought attention, but keeping her head low and being calm would make the pressure go away.

Elizabeth left and continued the lesson later that evening before feeding time, and the mare only took a single step away when she approached the fence. The woman remained at the fence for several minutes, and the mare eventually dropped her head completely and let her attention wander.
